Substance misuse and dual diagnosis from a neurobiological perspective

This webinar will describe shared characteristics of addictive substances and how they differ from most prescription drugs, including stimulant medication for ADHD. Herein, the core neurobiological elements of reward learning and anticipation will be explained. The difference between dependence and addiction will be covered and exemplified by both prescription and non-prescription drugs. Finally, the concept of dual diagnosis will be discussed, with an emphasis on how symptoms of substance use disorder overlap with symptoms of other psychiatric disorders, and how this often challenges treatment approaches.
